Vaginal surgeries refer to procedures that are performed through vagina to treat a variety of conditions affecting the female reproductive organs.

Common vaginal surgical procedures

• • Vaginal hysterectomy: Removal of uterus through the vagina for treatment of uterine prolapse, uterine fibroids, dysfunctional uterine bleeding etc.

• • Colporrhaphy: Surgical repair of the vagina is usually done to treat vaginal prolapse (cystocele or rectocele and enterocele repair). It may also be required after childbirth, sexual assault, or other injuries.

• • Colpotomy: The word colpotomy means making an incision into vagina. This may be used to drain pelvic collections, excise ovarian cysts, perform tubal ligation, or remove uterine fibroids.

• • Episiotomy: A surgical incision made in the perineum (the area between the vagina and anus) to expand the opening of the vagina to prevent tearing of vagina during delivery.

• • Colposcopy: A colposcope is a specialized instrument used to visualize the vagina and cervix under magnification to diagnose precancerous or cancerous lesions.

• • Cervical cryosurgery: Cryosurgery freezes and destroys an area of the cervix in which precancerous cells have been found.

• • Cervical cerclage: The cervix is closed by an encirclage suture to prevent a miscarriage or premature birth.

• • Dilatation and curettage/evacuation: A gynecological procedure in which the cervix is dilated and the lining of the uterus (endometrium) or any intrauterine pregnancy is scraped or sucked out.

• • Vaginal cysts and vaginal tumors excision

• • TVTO: A surgical procedure done to treat female stress urinary incontinence in which the urethra is lifted with the help of a transvaginal surgical tape
